Characters: Who are the main characters that we meet in this part of the book? What did you learn about them?
  • Mohammed Bilal: He is a captured slave from West Africa, Sierra Leone. He gets along well with other people, so he's probably a nice person. He hasn't tried to escape, so he might be scared of his situation. He's only 11 years old. He was captured by another tribe. He is from the Kwesi tribe. He speaks other languages, so he is probably smart.

Setting: What is the historical significance of when and where this chapter takes place?
  • It takes place during the time of slavery.

Plot: What happened in the chapter? Summarize the events.

Muhammed is in the ship's hold. The conditions are awful: chained to a wooden bed, suffocating room, packed with bodies, etc.

Analysis: Why is this section important? How do you think the story will end?

The section is important because it is the start of the Lewis family. It describes the conditions and historical context of that time.

The story will end with "justice" being given to the Lewis family. They will be treated equally, like the White people. They might get freedom.
